Kelly St, Battery Point

When we first set foot in Korunnah at Battery Point it was obvious the place was special.  Many of its original features, including timber joinery and hard plaster walls and ceilings were intact and in very good condition.  As is to be expected of a 180-year-old building, it also had some issues, and some problems exacerbated by previous attempts to overcome them.  The traditional 4-room layout of the original cottage was evident but had been compromised.

From the beginning, we set out to find a balance between the need to preserve significant elements of the original building fabric, and creating a complimentary extension that would provide a warm, sunny, light-filled living wing.  The living space itself spills through to the Kitchen and Dining Room across well-defined thresholds incised through the original fabric of the building.  Views to and from the old and the new spaces are framed by these apertures and reinforce the connection between them.
